Buying Copilot Business? Check what comes switched on.

From November 2, new Copilot Business purchases through CSP have usage billing configured by default. Ask about the limits before the invoice.

Buying Copilot seats? Put one more question on the purchase order: what else can start running up a bill?

Microsoft’s September 16 announcement says that, starting November 2, 2026, new Microsoft 365 Copilot Business purchases through Cloud Solution Provider partners will have pay-as-you-go billing configured by default. That covers standalone licenses and bundles. Microsoft says the setup includes the Azure subscription needed for usage billing and names Cowork among the eligible experiences.

That is a specific purchasing change. It does not say every existing Copilot subscription switches over on November 2. Check the exact product and purchasing channel before forwarding an alarming email to everyone.

The useful question is who controls the spending

Less setup sounds good. So does knowing who approved the extra spending. Ideally those two conversations happen before the invoice.

Microsoft’s cost-management documentation points administrators to Copilot → Cost management in the Microsoft 365 admin center. It describes spending policies, access controls, organization and user limits, alerts, and consumption reporting. Usage charges complement the fixed subscription; buying a seat is not a promise that every task is included.

There is another setting worth noticing: Microsoft says Auto-apply new services is on by default for spending policies. Administrators can turn it off if they want to review future supported services before adding them to a policy.

Ask before ordering

The partner announcement mentions a preset monthly limit but does not give its amount. Ask your reseller to confirm the applicable limit, who can use the metered services, where alerts go, and how to change or disable the setup. Get the answers for your actual order.

Then give someone ownership of checking consumption. “We thought it was included” is a fairly expensive billing policy.
