Copilot made the draft. Please stop emailing six copies.

Office inside Copilot promises a smoother handoff from AI draft to team edits. The useful habit is one shared file, named reviewers and an owner.

Copilot writes the first draft in seconds. Then three people email back three different versions, and somebody spends Friday figuring out which “final” file is actually final.

Excellent. We automated the typing and kept the archaeology.

Microsoft’s October 9 announcement of Office inside the Copilot app tackles a useful part of that problem. Word, Excel and PowerPoint editing and collaboration come into the Copilot experience. Microsoft says people can start in Chat or Cowork, keep working in the same file, and bring colleagues into it with comments and coauthoring.

The announcement describes a rollout for Frontier customers in Chat and Cowork. That is not a promise that every work account has it today. Check your organization’s availability and entitlements before building a class around it.

Try it with the document that keeps coming back

Take a department’s monthly update. Someone assembles it. A manager changes the priorities. Finance corrects a number. Another person spots an outdated date. This is an illustrative exercise, not a workflow we have independently tested.

  1. Use approved source material to ask Copilot for a first draft. Have it flag missing numbers and unresolved questions instead of filling them in.
  2. Choose one working document. Give the actual reviewers access to that file, with the appropriate permissions.
  3. Ask reviewers to comment and edit there. Send the link, not another attachment with “updated” in the name.
  4. Have an owner check the figures, resolve disagreements and approve the finished version. AI can help revise the wording; it does not inherit that person’s authority.

The part worth testing is the handoff: can your colleague open the same file, see your changes and leave useful feedback? A beautiful draft that nobody can find is still a pretty limited productivity improvement.

One file still needs an owner

Microsoft says these files live in OneDrive and retain formatting, comments, sharing permissions and version history. Library provides a place to reopen work. That continuity is useful; it does not mean everyone automatically gets access, or that every proposed change is correct.

If the new experience has not reached you, you can still adopt the working habit: one shared document, named reviewers and a person responsible for the final answer.

Let Copilot make the draft faster. Please don’t use the saved time to manufacture six more copies.
