You found the file. Now ask it a question.
Copilot Search is adding contextual chat. Start with the right document, then check what the answer used.
You find the document. Good. Now you have to find the answer inside it.
Those are two different jobs. Anyone who has opened a forty-page procedure to answer a one-line question knows the difference. Finding the file is the beginning of the work, not the trophy ceremony.
Microsoft’s October 6 release notes describe chat inside Microsoft 365 Copilot Search on Windows and the web. Search results can provide context for follow-up questions and generated content. The documented flow is to search, review the results, then use the chat pane. Microsoft’s release notes, roadmap 512429.
Try one question you can check
Here’s an illustrative exercise for a team that already has access to the feature. Search for an approved travel-expense policy. Review the results before asking anything. Check the owner, version, and effective date. “Travel policy FINAL final 3” deserves a little supervision.
Then try:
Using the travel-expense policy in these results, what does an employee need to submit for reimbursement? Identify the document and effective date you used. Link to the relevant sections. If the results contain conflicting versions or do not answer the question, say so.
Open the cited document and check the answer. This is a suggested exercise, not a workflow we have independently tested. The prompt asks for evidence; it does not guarantee that the answer will supply it correctly.
Finding something does not make it the right thing
The useful habit is to inspect the search results before asking the follow-up. Otherwise, you can get a beautifully organized answer from the wrong document. Faster confusion is still confusion.
Microsoft lists this change in the October 6 release group and says features roll out gradually within organizations. Don’t promise everyone the same controls today. Confirm your actual product, license, and available interface; a work login alone does not establish them. These notes concern Microsoft 365 Copilot, not consumer or GitHub Copilot.
For a first exercise, choose an ordinary approved document whose answer you already know. Search for it. Ask one useful question. Check the citation. Then show the next person how you checked it, too.
