Your Copilot agent can start itself. Give it a small job first.

New Copilot Studio triggers can start work from an event or a schedule. Try a bounded finance task before handing over the whole process.

Someone in finance has to remember to start the same review every Friday. Collect the explanations. Chase the missing ones. Prepare the summary. Apparently the first step in automation is remembering to automate it.

Microsoft’s October 15 announcement points toward a useful change: Copilot Studio agents that start work from an event or a schedule. These capabilities are rolling out through Frontier. This is a Copilot Studio development, not a promise that everyone’s Copilot Chat now runs the department unattended. Read Microsoft’s announcement.

The prompt gets a starting gun

Microsoft’s preview instructions for agents powered by the GitHub Copilot harness describe triggers such as an incoming email, a new SharePoint item, or a scheduled time. The event supplies details; the agent’s instructions and tools determine what happens next.

Publishing and activation matter. Microsoft says to test every trigger before publishing, and to republish after changing the trigger, instructions or tools. Usage-based billing applies, including to building and testing; activity may consume Copilot Credits. Don’t assume a workplace Copilot subscription covers this work. Read the preview setup and billing guidance.

Give it a small job before giving it Friday

Here’s an illustrative finance exercise, not something we’ve tested: when the weekly review starts, prepare a list of budget explanations that are missing. Draft a summary for the finance lead. Stop there.

Before enabling it, write down four things:

Then test an ordinary event, a duplicate, and an incomplete submission. Those are our suggested checks, not a claim that the product handles each case automatically.

An agent that remembers to start could be useful. An agent that enthusiastically starts the wrong job every Friday is just a recurring meeting with permissions.

Start with the missing-explanations list. Earn the right to do more.
