Copilot has another name. This time, check the purchasing rules.

The add-on label is changing now, and December brings new purchase options. Easier purchasing does not supply every Microsoft 365 app entitlement.

You open the licensing list and Copilot has acquired another label. Before anyone schedules a meeting to investigate the parentheses, here’s what changed.

Microsoft’s October 14 Partner Center notice says current Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Business offers begin gaining “(add-on)” in their names on October 16. Existing subscriptions need no action: their IDs, pricing, renewal arrangements and service stay the same.

December brings a different purchasing rule

From December 1, 2026, new offers can be purchased without a qualifying Microsoft 365 base subscription. Microsoft says they will have new product and SKU IDs, with the same pricing as current offers. The change spans channels, including CSP, and commercial, education, government and nonprofit customers.

The important qualification: buying Copilot more easily does not grant every underlying Microsoft 365 app or service. Experiences still depend on what the customer is licensed to use.

In CSP, the existing add-on offers stop being sold on December 1. Existing customers can still renew and adjust seats; this is not a shutdown. Read Microsoft’s dated notice.

Ask about the work, not just the product name

Imagine a manager planning to use Copilot with departmental spreadsheets, email and presentations. “We can buy it” answers the purchasing question. It does not finish the conversation about the tools those employees actually have.

Our suggestion: put three columns on the quote review. What task will staff do? Which app or service does it use? What licenses cover that combination? Have the supplier confirm the answers before treating a simpler purchase as a complete rollout plan.

And if an internal report matches licenses by their display names, give its owner a heads-up. Parentheses are a ridiculous reason for a spreadsheet to have an existential crisis.

A shorter shopping list is welcome. Check what you’re actually taking home.
